What's Maarten Working on Now?Maarten Schaddelee, SculptorInspiration for Eagle's Perch ChairThe inspiration for “Eagle’s Perch” comes from the many eagles that perch in the trees above and at eye level outside my studio waiting patiently to see something that catches their interest out on the water. Then with a mighty swoosh they are off. Just as with this hall chair we sit, maybe put on our shoes, tie our laces and off we go into the world. The entire chair is made from Vancouver Island woods which no doubt would have had an eagle or two land on their mighty limbs. The three different woods are Douglas fir, Maple and Red cedar. Maarten has been working on a great number of different pieces let's look at this one. Remember the next Fine Art Show is June 5th & 6th from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Maarnada gallery. After the Fall Show Maarten and Nadina made ready for a family Christmas and then their yearly retreat to Maui. Both Maarten and Nadina use the vacation to relax recharge and rejuvenate, Maui is a beautiful and romantic place. Maui is also a place to see whales in their natural habitat and Maarten has spent his time observing them by listening under water and viewing from the shore. Maarten's inspirations come from the natural world that surrounds him and that theme reflects in his art. As a former competitive swimmer and water polo player Maarten is still going for the gold. BC Gold Marble that is, since their return from holidays Maarten has created another stunning piece that can only be seen and touched to appreciate. He has been working in the wood studio as well and carved an eagle wall hanging. Check out the pictures. November has roared up so quickly, it has almost past us by. Maarten has been focusing his magical energy to complete many beautiful touchable pieces in preparation for the Fall Art Show. During the Art Show the winds and stormy sea provided a show of terrific waves crashing into the new terrace at the shore. Luckily no one that went to look at the active sea ended up being washed away by the large waves. Thank you to all who attended the show and helped to make it a great success. As always we are open by appointment year round, please come to October, Maarten has been busy with a larger project; he has built a terrace at the sea's edge below the studio with a walk way along the rocks to the shore line. Currently he is in the wood studio and the completion of a beautiful Eagle of BC Gold Marble. The hybrid wood and paint creation in the wood studio is a very dynamic piece of Eagles flying in a group. Maarten has really just started but still progressed far enough to see that his flowing natural lines and shapes dominate his creative art. The Eagle of BC Gold Marble has the same incredible smooth and flowing lines and curves that are so soft to the touch. September, Maarten is still in full out mode working in both his wood and stone studios. This month he is just finishing the very beautiful Carrara marble sculpture. In wood Maarten has the finishing touches on the mahogany carving he started last month, see the "Recent Art" page for a look at that piece and others. Maarten, in the picture right, is cutting marble with a water cooled chain saw in preparation for a new sculpture, by using tools, like this saw, Maarten can conserve material compared with older techniques like drilling, splitting or chiseling sections out. August finds me working in both Studios. In the Wood Studio, a small ‘Relationship Tale’ isemerging in Honduras Mahogany. Each Tale brings me closer to myself, as always something comes up for me. In the Stone Studio, a very exciting new design about the flow ofcreative energy in very special Carrara marble. I did a drawing to be a guide, but of course as soon as I got into this aristocratic marble from Italy it led me on a new and very exciting journey of discovery. Stay tuned! |
